Bari, Italy

I visited Bari during a cruise stop, so I only had two or three hours to visit.
The origins of Bari are unknown, but it was conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. It was invaded by the Barbarians in the 5th century but conquered by the Byzantines shortly after and their rule lasted, on and off, for about 500 years. In the 11th century, Bari fell under Norman rule.
In the 19th century, while part of the kingdom of Naples, Bari underwent significant urban renovation.
Bari is the second most important economic center in Southern Italy, after Naples, and an important seaport.

What I visited in a couple of hours:

Swabian Castle
This castle started being built immediately after the Norman conquest. It was significantly renovated between 1233 and 1239.

Basilica of Saint Nicholas
The Basilica was built to receive the remains of Saint Nicholas, brought from Myra in Lycia (modern Turkey) in 1087.

Cathedral of Saint Sabino
The oldest church in town.

The city walls
You can walk on top of the city walls, parallel to the waterfront.

How to go:
Naples is an important seaport and many cruises and ferries stop there. You can also reach Naples by train, which takes about 4 hours from Rome.
