The Morosini Lions Fountain, Heraklion, Greece

The Lions Fountain, in Heraklion, was built in 1628 by order of Venetian superintendent Morosini. It is the final section of a more complex system conceived to bring water to Heraklion, which also includes a 15 km long acheduct. The fountain lobes are decorated with scenes from Greek mythology, namely tritons, nymphs and dolphins. The lions are a symbol of Venetian power.
