Parc de La Ciutadella, Barcelona, Spain

The Parc de la Ciutadella is located on land previously occupied by the, at its time, largest fortress (Ciutadella) in Europe. This fortress was built by King Philip V in 1714, following the war of succession. Its purpose was to keep the city of Barcelona under control, thus becoming a much-hated symbol of central government. It was demolished, at the first opportunity, in 1869, and, with the Universal Exhibition of 1888, the first park of Barcelona was created on the land previously occupied by the fortress. A very young Antonio Gaudi is said to have collaborated in the plans of the Cascada (waterfall). The Parc de la Ciutadella includes the Catalonian Parliament and the city's Zoo.

Opening hours:10 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.
