Granada, Spain

Granada was the capital of the Nazari Kingdom, the last Muslim Kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula, from the 13th to the 15th centuries. During this period Granada became a very prosperous city, allowing for the construction of the Al Alhambra citadel and the Nazaries Palaces. The citadel was built on top of a previous Ziri fortification. The Ziri Kingdom was founded in the 11th century, and was a result of a secession from the Cordoba Caliphate.
After the reconquest by the Christian Monarchs, Granada continued to be the capital of the Castilian Kingdom of Granada, until 1833, when a new administrative division was adopted.
