Lake Voulismeni, Agios Nikolaos, Greece

Lake Voulismeni was a fresh water lake until 1870 when it was connected by a narrow channel to the old harbour. For many years it was believed that the lake was bottomless and according to legend goddess Athena used to bathe in it. In 1853 a British admiral found that it was about 60 m deep, which was confirmed by Jacques Costeau in 1976.
The lake is surrounded by many cafes and tavernas and if you're lucky you might even spot a loggerhead turtle.
