Loulé's Carnival, Portugal

Loule's Carnival dates back to 1906, in an effort to have a more civilised, peaceful celebration. It is now the oldest event of its kind in Portugal, with parades lasting for 3 days (the same every day).

The church of Santa Maria do Castelo stands within the castle walls and was built between 1569 and 1606, by order of King D. Sebastião, to replace the old medieval church. Decades later, in 1640, the church became an important national symbol when King D. João IV consecrated the crown of the Virgin Mary, proclaiming her the Queen and Patroness of Portugal, after which the Portuguese monarchs never wore the crown again. The church was badly damaged by the earthquake of 1755, which killed 29 people inside the church. The restoration works were slow and only ended in the 19th century. King D. Basilica of Saint Eulalia, Merida, Spain

The Basilica of Saint Eulalia was built in the 4th century on the site believed to be where she was martyred. The Basilica was badly damaged during the Muslim period, with the fine marbles and mosaics and the gilded lacunar (space in the ceiling between the beams) from its early days having been lost.  In the 13th century, after the reconquest of the city by Alfonso IX, the present basilica was built on top of the original ground plan, using many of the Roman building materials. In front of the basilica stands the "Hornito de Santa Eulalia", a small chapel embellished with the remains of the Temple of Mars from the Roman period. Opening hours: The church can only be visited from 19h30 to 20h30; the crypt is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., closed from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. to Mar.). Dam Square, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A dam was built on the site in the 13th century, forming the first connection between the settlements on each side of the Amstel river (hence the name Amsterdam). The dam was built up, eventually becoming large enough for a town square. The area became the centre of commercial activity and government. The Damrak, the former mouth of the Amstel river was partially filled in in the 19th century and Dam square became surrounded by land on all sides. On May 7th, 1945, two days after German capitulation, a group of German soldiers started shooting into the crowds waiting for Canadian troops to arrive, killing over 30 people and injuring over 100. After WWII the National Monument was erected, in remembrance of those who died during the war.

Rua Augusta Arch, Lisbon, Portugal

The Rua Augusta Arch offers visitors a unique panoramic view of the city. Inside the arch visitors can learn about its history. It was built between 1759 and 1873, to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the Great Earthquake of 1755. At the top of the arch, there's a statue of Glory crowning Valor and Genius. Right below, on top of the columns, are the statues of four Portuguese historical figures: Nuno Álvares Pereira, Constable of Portugal in the 14th century, Viriatus, chief of the Lusitanian people in the 2nd century BC, Vasco da Gama, navigator that discovered the sea route to India and the Marquis of Pombal, Prime Minister of Portugal at the time of the Great Earthquake.
