Rialto Bridge, Venice, Italy
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous bridge crossing the Grand Canal in Venice. The previous wooden bridge was built in 1250. It was partially burnt during a revolt in 1310 and it collapsed twice, in 1444 and again in 1524, under the weight of a crowd, so starting as early as 1503 the construction of a stone bridge was considered. However, the adequate plan, which would allow for the navigation of larger boats, was only presented in 1588 by Antonio da Ponte. Rialto Bridge was concluded in 1591 and was very similar to the wooden bridge it succeeded, with two inclined ramps leading to a main central portico. There are shops on both sides of the bridge.
