Tomar Castle, Portugal

In 1159 the tumbledown Castle of Ceras and its surrounding land was donated to the Knights Templar by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, to help defend the recently conquered territory.
In 1160 the Master of the Order, D. Gualdim Pais, founded the town of Tomar and had a new castle built in a more appropriate location.
In 1312, when the Order of the Knights Templar was extinct by order of the Pope, a new Order was created in Portugal, the Order of Christ, to which the wealth and properties of the Knights Templar were transferred. In 1338 Tomar became the headquarters of the Order of Christ.

Entrance free.
