Roman Galleries of Lisbon, Portugal

The Roman galleries of Lisbon are a cryptoporticus, a subterranean gallery whose vaulting supported the buildings above ground. It dates from Roman times, sometime between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The cryptoporticus was found in 1770, during the reconstruction, after the Great Earthquake of 1755. For conservation reasons, the structure is kept under water most of the time, which is drained twice a year for maintenance. During this time, at the end of March and at the end of September, it is possible to visit the galleries, by scheduling with the Museu de Lisboa.
