Peso da Régua, Portugal

Peso da Régua, also known as Régua, is considered the capital of the Douro Demarcated Region. This was the first such region in the world, created in 1756 by Marquis of Pombal, Prime Minister of Portugal, and Régua was at its centre. It was where "rabelo" boats would come to transport the Oporto wine to Vila Nova de Gaia. Régua's surrounding landscape is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. While in there you can visit the Douro Museum (opening hours Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., standard ticket €5).
