Monserrate Palace, Sintra, Portugal

Sir Francis Cook, Viscount of Monserrate, ordered the construction of palace Monserrate in 1858. The architect responsible for the project was James Knowles Jr. and the design has romanticist and mudéjar Moorish revivalism influences. The gardens were the responsibility of painter William Stockdale, botanist William Nevill and master gardener James Burt. The gardens include species from all over the world and are organised by geographic areas, the most popular being Mexico's Garden and the Rose Garden.
The Palace was the Summer residence of the Cook Family. It was eventually bought by the Portuguese State in 1949.

Opening hours: 9.30 a.m. to 6.15 p.m; closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Ticket (standard): €8, including the park.

How to get to Monserrate: If you are in the village centre/ train station take bus 435 to reach Monserrate.
