Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France
In the 12th century Maurice of Sully, bishop of Paris, undertook the construction of a new Cathedral on the site of two previous worship places: Notre Dame and Saint Etiénne. In 1163 the first stone of Notre Dame was laid, in the presence of Pope Alexander III. The construction of the cathedral took the following two centuries and it was expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries.
However, by the early 19th century the cathedral had fallen in disrepair. In 1831, to help raise awareness to Notre Dame, writer Victor Hugo published the hugely successful novel "Notre Dame de Paris". A restoration plan was set in motion and on May 31, 1864, the cathedral was dedicated by Georges Darboy, archbishop of Paris.
