Saint Nicholas Church, Ghent, Belgium

Saint Nicholas Church dates from the early 13th century and is one of the oldest landmarks in Ghent. It is one of the most beautiful examples of Scheldt Gothic style (early Gothic). It was built when Ghent was one of the most prosperous cities in Europe by the merchants' guilds, as Saint Nicholas is the merchants' patron saint. Its tower carried the town bells until the neighbouring Belfry tower was built.
One of the showpieces of the church is its organ from the mid 19th century. The two massive glass stained windows also date from the mid-19th century.

Opening hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays.
