Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga, Portugal
Many hilltops in Europe were sites of religious devotion since ancient times and it's likely that Bom Jesus do Monte was one of those hilltops, particularly considering the religious tradition in the city of Braga. However, the first reference to religious activity in Bom Jesus dates from the 14th century, when a small chapel was built, later rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries.
In 1629 a church and six chapels were built, dedicated to the Passion of the Christ. By the 18th century the sanctuary had fallen into disrepair and under the patronage of the Archbishop of Braga, D. Rodrigo de Moura Telles, the present sanctuary started being built in 1722. Around 1781 the Archbishop of Braga, D. Gaspar de Bragança, decided to renovate the sanctuary and a new church, following the neoclassical style, started being built in 1784 and was consecrated in 1834.
Opening hours: 8 am to 7 pm; to 6 pm in Winter.
