Parc Güell, Barcelona, Spain
Parc Güell's assignment of design was given to Antonio Gaudi, by businessman Eusebi Güell, in 1900. Güell intended to develop the estate for well-off families and allowance was made for 60 plots.
However, for a number of factors- complex conditions for sale of the plots, highly exclusive characteristics of the project, lack of suitable transport system- the development became unviable and, in 1922, the City Council agreed to buy the park, already a recommended tourist attraction. It opened as a municipal park in 1926.
The park has two different areas- the monumental area, which requires an entrance fee, and the free access area which you can visit at no charge.
In the free entrance area Gaudi respected the vegetation already growing in the area and, when new species had to be introduced, he opted for Mediterranean species which require little water.
I didn't visit the monumental area as there was a 3-hour queue, so if you want to visit this area I advise buying (controlled time) tickets in advance online (here).
Opening hours: 8 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. (9.30 p.m. Apr., Sep. and Oct.; 6.15 p.m. Nov. to Mar.)
Entrance fee (standard): €8
