El Torcal de Antequera, Spain
El Torcal de Antequera is a Nature Reserve Park located south of the city of Antequera (Andalucia, Spain). This stone maze is formed by Jurassic limestone which was once a seabed, uplifted to an elevation of 1300 m during the Tertiary era. Later a series of fractures, cracks and faults were exploited by erosion and produced alleys between large blocks of stone, visible today.
Visiting:
There's a visitors centre with a gift shop and cafeteria at the starting point/ parking area. It opens from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can book activities here.
Visiting is free of charge. There are two main hiking trails: green and yellow. They overlap for some distance, so follow the green AND/OR the yellow/ white signs (both colours- green and yellow/white- might not be present), until you reach the plaques in the photo below, where you have to choose which trail you want to follow. The green trail takes about 45 min., while the yellow trail takes about 2 hours. Don't forget to take a hat, sunscreen, water and a phone as there might not be anyone around, particularly on the yellow trail. If you visit in summer I advise starting late in the afternoon but plan to have sunlight during all the circuit (between 5 and 6 p.m.)
How to get there: You can go to Antequera by train, but from there you'll need a car or taxi.
