Bagni della Regina Giovanna, Sorrento, Italy

Image
The baths of queen Giovanna are a waterhole, located about 2km from Sorrento, protected from the sea by towering limestone cliffs. A natural arch connects the pool to the sea. The baths have been attracting bathers for centuries, and nearby are the 2000 years old remains of a Roman villa. The baths namesake is queen Giovanna d'Anjou, sovereign of Naples between the late 14th century and the early 15th century, who is said to have used the pool as a backdrop for her loving encounters. How to go: Take the orange bus ( line A) from Corso Italia in Sorrento. There's also a less frequent bus leaving from the train station. After leaving the bus at the baths there is still a 500m walk, not accessible by car.

Its most famous eruption was in 79AD and destroyed two major Roman cities, Ercolano and Pompeii.  Today it is part of a natural park, with a visitors' centre and several walking trails. The better known and most used trail is trail n. 5, heading to the crater. It is about 1.6 km long and takes about one, one and a half hour up and back to the parking lot, although I suggest taking more time to appreciate the views and nature. The crater has no lava, just a little steam. Opening hours: 9 am to 5 pm Entrance fee: €10 (bring change as no cards are accepted and the ticket officer can be very unhelpful and rude if you don't have change); How to go: Take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi (line 3) and then the EAV bus just across the train station (€3.10, you can buy the ticket from the driver, get...
