The Cathedral in Lamego was built between 1129 and 1191, following the restoration of Lamego's diocese, after the city was reconquered from the moors. It was consecrated in 1175. From its original version, in the Romanesque style, only the square military-like tower remains, illustrating a period when churches also had a defensive purpose. Through the centuries the cathedral was enlarged and renovated several times, most significantly in the 16th century, when the cloister was built, and in the 18th century, a prosperous period that allowed for the general embellishment of the building. The ceiling paintings, by the famous Italian painter and architect Nicolau Nasoni, are from this period. Opening hours: 8 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm Entrance free

Lamego Castle is located on a hilltop, at 543m, crowning the historical center. It was built on top of a "castro" from the 5th century BC, to protect the population, probably during the Islamic Period. Lamego was reconquered in 1057 and the castle was reinforced in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. From its original version only the keep, part of the walls and the cistern remain. The keep was renovated in the 16th century to be used as a dwelling. The castle was restored in the 1940s to celebrate the centennials of Portugal's foundation and Portugal's independence from Spain. Opening hours: Tue. to Sat. from 10 am to 12 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm; Sun. from 10 am to 12 pm. Entrance free
